Introduction to Object Oriented programming: Bootcamp at Fezeka High School, Gugulethu

An often cited gap in attempts to develop coding skills in South Africa, is the fact that sufficient computational logic skills are not developed earlier in the educational process. This Java focused Coding Bootcamp is a response of the Colab to this highlighted challenge.

Along with local NGO, Isibaloluntu, the Colab team presented an introduction to Java Bootcamp at Fezeka High School in Gugulethu.

This training course is aimed at Grade 10-12 learners with an active interest in learning software development skills. The course has been presented in October 2016 and February 2017 at Fezeka High School in Gugulethu.

The course was presented at the school’s computer labs with the valued collaboration of both the School Principal and the Computer Applications and Technology (CAT) teaching staff. This training course is aimed at Grade 10-12 learners with an active interest in learning software development skills.

All students that completed the course and assigned evaluation project were presented with certificates for their effort and dedication.

The training was presented by Chiunde Mwanza and Xolani Delman.

Chiunde was one of the first Colab Core team members to join the Colab in 2013. He is currently a Master's student and junioer lecturer in Mathematics, after having completed his undergraduate studies in Computer Science and Mathematics.

This first intervention at Fezeka was positioned as a pilot project and we are glad to report that we have again engaged with the local NGO and schools and will be expanding our project there in 2017 to include more computer labs and another school in Gugulethu.
