The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) is implementing the project “Fair Forward - Artificial Intelligence for All” on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The Fair Forward initiative aims to create a more open, inclusive, and sustainable international approach to AI. This is achieved specifically through the development of local artificial intelligence ecosystems in Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, India, and Indonesia.
In South Africa, GIZ works in close collaboration with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA), and researchers from the University of the Western Cape (UWC) to develop the AI Maturity Assessment Framework of South Africa (AI MAF). This project was launched on the 18th of April and is supported by the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) and aims to contribute to DCDT’s national AI plan.
Stakeholder workshops during September provided a critical avenue for the co-design of the framework. Participants in Johannesburg and Cape Town engaged in robust discussions, reflecting on and commenting on a preliminary concept of the AI MAF, providing valuable recommendations for improvements. Thank you to everyone who participated and shared their ideas. It is greatly appreciated! The core team is currently integrating the feedback and the outcome of the workshops and validation process will be shared within the next two months.
